Decorating Pumpkins with Preschoolers

Fall is one of our favorite times of year at CreativeWorks. The potential for fun arts and craft projects is only limited by how much time we have available. Once it gets closer to Halloween we like to do a lot of projects with pumpkins.

While pumpkin decorating brings to mind taking out the carving knife and cutting out a face it need not be an activity involving knives or sharp instruments. In our preschool enrichment programs the children come up with some great creative pumpkins just using common art supplies like tacky glue, pom poms and pipe cleaners.

  • Tacky Glue
  • Pom Poms
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Halloween Shapes
  • Googly Eyes

Instructions

  • There are no hard or fast rules with doing this project. Let the preschoolers use their own ideas when decorating. If they want to have one eye or eyes all over it that is fine. It is not encouraging their creativity if you tell them what to do or how to do it. The only input needed by an instructor is helping to stick in the pipe cleaners. Some pumpkins are really hard and you may need a pencil to start a hole while others are soft enough for the pipe cleaner to be inserted without a starter hole.
