Getting Creative with Recyclables

We like to do a lot of children's programs using recycled materials. There are lots of opportunities to incorporate recyclables into almost any class theme. For example, this recycled craft idea came from our race car theme summer camp.

Some of the freeplay at the camp include setting up hotwheels track and racing the cars down them (an activity that kids would do for hours on end if they were allowed). Encouraging the children to come up with track additions out of recycled materials from home adds and extra creative component to the activity. The kids had all kinds of great ideas from tunnels and jumps to the "flaming masking tape roll ring of fire".

  • The sky is the limit for materials. Boxes, bottles, tubes; whatever works.
  • Art supplies for decorating the props. This is optional of course.

Instructions

  • Like all good art projects for children the instructions and rules should be kept to a minimum. Let their imaginations take over. The only limitation we found was that not all types of cars will fit through an average cardboard tube. While not a big deal it can cause extensive backups on the track.
